How to say “adults only” on your wedding invitations, kindly

By Ben O'Connell

You’ve decided your wedding will be adults only. The harder part is saying so warmly enough that nobody feels left out, and clearly enough that nobody arrives with a toddler on their hip.

Most of it comes down to wording and timing. A little thought now saves a few awkward phone calls later.

Let the invitation do the talking

Start with the names on the envelope. They’re the clearest signal you have. An invitation addressed to two adults is an invitation for two adults, and most guests will read it that way.

Fill in the number of seats on each RSVP card too. A family who sees a 2 already written there will understand without anyone spelling it out.

Some guests miss quiet cues, so a short, friendly line helps. Something like “We love your little ones, but our celebration is just for the grown-ups” does the job without sounding stern. Put it on a separate information card where it’s easy to spot, and use the same words on your wedding website so the answer reads the same wherever guests look.

How direct you are is up to you. Some couples let the names speak for themselves, while others want a line in print so there’s no doubt. Do what feels right for your crowd.

One thing to avoid is pitching the day as a night off for parents. It’s meant kindly but can land badly.

Timing matters as much as wording. Give parents as much notice as you can so they can line up a babysitter, and a quick call when the save-the-dates go out never hurts. If a particular friend or relative might find it hard, talk to them yourself as soon as you’ve decided, rather than letting the invitation break the news.

Exceptions, and how to explain them

Some exceptions explain themselves. Flower girls, page boys and ring bearers have a job to do, and your own children belong at your wedding.

Make it clear these children are the exception, so no guest wonders whether it’s only their kids who missed out. A simple “no children apart from the bridal party” covers it.

Newborns are their own case. A baby only a few weeks old often can’t be left with a sitter, so if you want a new mum there, invite the baby too.

You might prefer an age cut-off instead, and that works as long as you apply it evenly. If you’re making room for a niece or nephew you’re especially close to, be honest about that bond with anyone who asks. Most people will understand.

When someone asks, or brings them anyway

Sometimes an RSVP comes back with the children’s names added. The phone call feels awkward, but it beats a surprise on the day, and it isn’t fair to bend the rule for one family when others have arranged childcare.

Be firm and gracious. Apologise for any mix-up, explain the invitation was for the adults only, and tell them you really hope they can still come.

If you hear someone plans to bring their kids regardless, have a gentle chat before the day. As a back-up, ask a trusted friend or relative to step in on the day and point the family towards nearby childcare, so you never have to leave your own celebration to sort it out.

Helping parents goes a long way. Some couples hire a babysitter and book a room near the reception, while others share a list of local sitters with good references. Pop the details on an invitation enclosure and your wedding website so parents can plan ahead.

Say it early, say it kindly and say it the same way every time. The people who love you will make their plans, and you’ll have a room full of grown-ups ready to celebrate with you.
