The alpine altar awaits

By Ben O'Connell

A new pop-up concept is bringing Vegas-style spontaneity to one of New Zealand’s most romantic locations. Imagine arriving at a candlelit stone church, fire crackling, snow-dusted mountains framing the windows, and leaving an hour later as a married couple. No months of planning. No spreadsheets. No weather anxiety. Just you, your person, and a moment you’ll never forget.

That’s exactly the vision behind Alpine Altar, a brand-new pop-up wedding experience launching this winter at the iconic Cardrona Church in Central Otago.

Running across just three days, 27 to 29 August 2026, Alpine Altar is the brainchild of local wedding celebrant Siobháin Hooper and wedding planner Sera Bowden, who together bring 18 years of industry expertise to the concept. Designed for couples who want something meaningful without the overwhelm of traditional wedding planning, it’s a first-of-its-kind offering for the region.

“We’re seeing that the big traditional style wedding is not for everyone,” says Siobháin. “Some couples feel overwhelmed by the planning process, or simply don’t get around to it because it’s all too much. Alpine Altar responds to that, offering something simple, meaningful and beautifully designed, without the pressure.”

Think of it as the ultimate wedding package: couples book a ceremony slot online and simply arrive ready to say ‘I do’. Every detail has been curated in advance, with each package including exclusive use of the beautifully styled Cardrona Church for one hour, a personalised legal ceremony, professional photography by Nat Symonds of Run in the Shadows, full venue coordination, and a bespoke styling concept by local creative Kirsty Ussher.

Optional extras such as a mini wedding cake and a content creator are available for couples who want to add a little more magic. Packages start from $4,800, with room for up to 10 guests, or the option to elope entirely alone.

Anyone who’s planned (or attended) a Central Otago winter wedding knows the tension of watching the forecast. Alpine Altar sidesteps that entirely.

“As an alternative to the outdoor elopements we see in the area, Cardrona Church offers a warm, weatherproof setting,” says Sera.

“With the fire lit and the mountains outside, it creates a uniquely romantic atmosphere couples can rely on. There’s no need to check the weather apps on repeat or to make a plan B or C.”

Inspired by the joyful spontaneity of Las Vegas weddings, Alpine Altar offers a more refined and distinctly Kiwi interpretation of the concept. The setting is spectacular, the team is world-class, and the experience is, in Siobháin’s words, intentionally uncomplicated.

“There may be no Elvis,” she laughs, “but there will definitely be a little glitter.”

The duo is also passionate about the broader impact of the concept, with Alpine Altar drawing on the rich community of creative professionals that makes Central Otago one of New Zealand’s most sought-after wedding destinations.

Ceremony slots are strictly limited across the three-day event, so early booking is strongly recommended. Visit www.alpinealtar.co.nz to secure your place.
