“Matt booked a surprise weekend away glamping in Cabarita NSW. He popped the question down the beach at sunset – It was the middle of winter and I was wearing my cosy clothes and slippers!
We currently live in Australia and had our big wedding in August this year. We chose to have a destination wedding in Bali, which meant we needed to do the legal side before we left.”
“Matt’s Nana Maureen was unable to travel to our wedding in Bali. So, we decided to surprise her with our secret ceremony. We told her we were all going to a weekend away as we were home from Australia and to pack nice clothes as we were going to take family photos. We managed to keep it a secret right up until we all arrived at the location; she started to get suspicious when we were popping a bottle of champagne. Once we told her what was actually happening, she was full of tears! It was so special to be able to include her in our marriage and it’s a memory we will never forget.
“It was important to us to have personalised vows, so we opted to have an intimate ceremony with our immediate family at our home in New Zealand prior. We had the most beautiful laid-back day; Matt and I drove the Land Rover down the lake and enjoyed some champagne as we prepared to say I do. It was so laid back; we cracked bottles of champagne, went down to our favourite part of the lake and said I do. Our ceremony was so special, thanks to Henrietta at Hitched by Hen. She really captured what love meant to me and Matt, it was perfect.”
“It was all about simplicity. Our ceremony was centred around the beautiful landscape and being surrounded by the people we love.”
We wanted a summer wedding, December is hectic for most people so we waited until people were back from their Christmas holidays. When we had confirmation that our dream wedding venue was available at the end of January, we knew it was the date for us and we locked it in. We got married at NZ High Country in Queenstown on the 30th of January 2021, as we live in Queenstown there is no other place we would rather get hitched and the views from our venue were incredible.
I had my heart set on having white florals so our cream/white theme came together from there. White florals, candles, du00e9cor, cake, wedding dress, sign writing + details, cream groomsmen suits and champagne bridesmaids dresses.
As we had such a small wedding, we did canapes and cocktails in the afternoon. When we left to take photos, we realised we forgot to cut the cake! When we returned, we decided to cut the cake spontaneously, sitting around the table drinking champagne and eating cake.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Nobody really notices the table arrangements and decor. Get organised early, have a timeline of the day as well as all the key vendors & wedding party contact details and send this to everyone involved in putting the day together, that way if there are any issues your team can sort it out for you. Have a good MC, they are vital in keeping timings on track. Allow more time than you think you’ll need to get ready on the day. Enjoy yourself! This is the most expensive party you are ever going to have, make sure the drinks are cold and the music is good, make it a wedding to remember!
